Music Sunday, Reception Follows May 13, 2022 by Jan AdamsWe are so grateful to all the musicians that have donated their time, energy, and talent. Their musical offerings engage our emotions and bring the Word to life for us during worship. We also extend our deep appreciation to our wonderful music leaders who every Sunday make the sanctuary resound with praise and thanks to God. They are: Julie DeBoer who directs the Grace Lutheran Choir and Family Choir. The choirs sing for Sunday services throughout the academic year. Choir membership is open to high school to adult singers. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Family Choir is multi-generational and children and their families are invited to participate. Karen Lionberger directs Pacibells. The handbell choir performs several times throughout the year. Elaine Mann is the organist and plays the Schlicker Organ during worship service and accompanies the Choirs. More about the service. The worship service on May 22 will celebrate the gift of music with a special presentation of the Gospel Mass, in which the words of the communion service are set to the rhythm and harmony of African-American music. The separate movements will be performed within the context of Holy Communion. This unique setting will be accompanied by piano, bass, and drum set with soloists from the choir. In 1979, Robert Ray sat down to write Gospel Mass, an experimental work, for a one-time performance. To his surprise, the piece caught on and became a seminal work of African-American music, performed by choirs and churches all over the world. A reception following worship will be held in honor of all musicians at Grace. In addition, we will be celebrating choir director Julie DeBoer as she finishes her tenure at Grace to take a position at the Washington Cathedral in DC. Please plan to attend to thank her and bid her farewell. There will be a basket available for cards. ShareTweetPin About Jan Adams
